Neighbours Day Aotearoa 2012 was celebrated with a shared picnic and barbeque lunch enjoyed by forty neighbours at Saint Peters Presbyterian Church in Harrison Road, Mt Wellington on Saturday.
The weather came to the neighbourhood party as people bought their picnic mats and meat to cook on the barbeque with the aim of building connections. The annual Neighbours Day campaign is about turning strangers into friends and every neighbourhood into a fun, friendly and safe place to live.
As there is no community constable in Mount Wellington and because Harrison Road is a cul de sac with a deceptively large number of residents, due to a large amount of apartments and townhouses in close proximity, the church decided to host a barbeque on Neighbours Day to help people meet each other.
Thirteen streets were represented, from Market Road in Epsom to Hamlin Rd in Mount Wellington.
After an enjoyable afternoon of eating, playing volleyball and badminton and watching the children play in the sandpit and playhouse everyone left hoping people will now recognise each other, give a friendly wave and begin turning their streets into a neighbourhood.
